For instance, electric furnaces are significantly cheaper than natural gas furnaces - sometimes even halving the upfront cost, comparatively - and can last for up to 30 years. The big downside to electric furnaces is that electricity tends to be a more expensive resource than gas, so your utility bills are likely to be higher every month - a cost that can definitely add up over time. 

Propane Furnaces

If gas and/or oil aren't available in your area, then a propane furnace is likely your next best bet. These types of furnaces are used sparingly in the United States, but they do represent a viable option. Propane is safe and easy to store, and propane furnaces are usually efficient. However, compared to oil, propane won't produce as much heat, meaning you'll have to burn more of it for adequate home heating.
